There have been a number of highly-anticipated luxury hotel openings in 2017. London, Paris and New York are all home to shiny new 5-star boltholes, but which are the best?

According to the annual ranking from Luxury Travel Intelligence, a members-only resource for affluent globetrotters, there were 14 properties that stood out above the rest and delivered on their promises of taking the luxury experience to the next level.

But it wasn’t good news for all the new luxury hotels that opened this year, however. LTI’s experts – who over the last 12 months have visited 74 new hotels around the globe, funding the experience themselves in order to ensure an unbiased and rigorous assessment – revealed that two new hotels disappointed them enough to make it onto the ‘worst’ list.

So, which hotels have got it right and which ones have some improvements to make this year? Here are the 14 best new luxury hotels of 2017, followed by the two worst, according to the high-end travel experts over at LTI.

14. The Whitby, New York



This new hotel from London based Firmdale Hotels impressed many when it opened in early 2017 billed as “a celebration of contemporary art and design.” The 30 seat state-of-the-art cinema and a unique Orangery are highlights.

This fine new addition to Cape Town’s luxury hotel scene occupies an exclusive location above the vibrant V&A Waterfront, making it an already popular haunt with international jet-setters. With just 28 beautiful rooms and suites, a stunning rooftop pool and the stylish Willaston Bar, it’s clear why the hotel has been so well received.

Complete with 141 spacious rooms and suites, an outstanding spa and two posh swimming pools, this new urban resort in Brazil’s Sao Paulo is as eye-catching as it is welcoming. The glass-walled wine cellar with personal sommelier Gabriele Frizon is well worth a visit.

The first Jackalope branded hotel opened in Victoria, Australia in May and has gone on to earn rave reviews from those who have stayed here. 6. Bürgenstock Hotel, Lucerne



Perched 2,800ft above Lake Lucerne, the August debut of the Burgenstock Resort was anticipated to be one of the openings of the year. And it didn’t disappoint; after nine years of planning and construction, it now dazzles with 102 impressive rooms and suites, a restaurant, alpine spa, lobby bar, wine cellar and cigar lounge.

1. The Bulgari, Dubai

Understated luxury is not usually associated with Dubai’s luxury hotel scene, but Bulgari bucks the trend with its Dubai property when it opened late in the year – 5 December, to be exact. Striking architecture gives way to a pristine interior, while the private beach and beach club offer plenty of room to catch rays is style. Spread over 13 hectares, the hotel also features a 50-berth marina, excellent spa and a wonderful Italian restaurant helmed by chef Niko Romito.
