Qatar utökar ägarandelen i IAG till 25.1%

Qatar Airways has bought a $600 million stake in British Airways-owner IAG (ICAG.L) to increase its holding to 25.1%, advancing its strategy of building a global portfolio of airline investments.

Qatar previously held 21.4% of IAG, which also owns Spanish carriers Iberia and Vueling and Ireland’s Aer Lingus. IAG’s share price has risen by 52% in the last six months.

Shares in IAG were trading up 1.4% at 641 pence in early deals on Wednesday, giving the group a market value of 12.75 billion pounds ($16.6 billion).

This is more significant than it sounds, because it gives Qatar Airways a veto over any major decisions (‘special resolutions’ in City parlance) which would require 75% of the shares to vote in favour.

Non-EU investors are limited to a 49% shareholding in total under EU aviation rules, and IAG does at times restrict purchases of shares by non-EU groups in order to remain under this limit. As IAG is legally a Spanish company this position will not change under any UK / EU trade deal.

Innebar detta att Qatar kan aga mer an 30% av IAG utan att behova gora en mandatory offer? Later som ett markligt "loophole" fran reglerna om mandatory offers i Koden. Men om det stammer (jag har inte satt in mig narmre) sa kan de ju fortsatta kopa upp till 49%, vilket troligen ar mer attraktivt for de an att aga hela bolaget.
