Recent research has revealed that Kuala Lumpur-Singapore is now the world’s busiest passenger air route.

In OAG’s annual Top 20 Busiest International Routes, which are calculated by analysing aircraft frequencies on international flight routes in the 12 months to February 2018, found that there were 30,537 trips between Kuala Lumpur-Singapore throughout the year.

The flight between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur is short and only takes about an hour. There are also plans in place to build a high-speed rail link between the two cities.

Hong Kong-Taipei placed second, Jakarta-Singapore came third, Hong Kong-Shanghai Pudong was fourth, and Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur completed an all-Asian top 5.

Mayur Patel, Regional Sales Director JAPAC for OAG, said: “Given the robust expansion of air passenger travel across Asia Pacific and the fierce competition between carriers in the region, it is unsurprising that 14 of the world’s busiest 20 routes, including 8 of the top 10 routes, are between Asian city pairs.”

The research also found that 14 of the world’s busiest 20 routes, including eight of the top 10 routes, are between Asian city pairs. Hong Kong is busiest Asian airport hub featuring in six routes.

Additionally, five Asian airports – Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Taipei and Shanghai Pudong – featured on 2 of the global routes. And the highest on-time performance (OTP) among Asian routes was Kansai-Taipei with 83%, followed by Bangkok-Singapore (80%) and Incheon-Kansai (78%).
