Sri Lanka is now home to one more standout luxury hotel thanks to the recent opening of the Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo.

Following a number of recent high-profile openings in Sri Lanka, the arrival of Hong Kong’s distinguished Shangri-La brand in the capital of Colombo becomes the city’s first new luxury hotel in 30 years.

Joining Shangri-La’s Hambantota resort on the southern coast of the island (which opened in 2016), the new Colombo offering is located on the iconic Galle Face Green coastal promenade, overlooking the enchanting Indian Ocean.

A step into the new hotel’s lobby will be greeted by a specially-commissioned metal sculpture of a baby elephant by the Chinese artist Man Fung-Yi, exemplifying a design philosophy that reenvisions traditional Sri Lankan motifs with a contemporary flair.

Rooms are stylish, decked in silk, marble and woods, with an overall spacious and bright atmosphere. Suites come with butler service and access to the exclusive Horizon Club lounge.

Set within a 10-acre complex, there are activities and facilities galore. Work up a sweat at the 24-hour gym, sip a cocktail by the outdoor pool and bar while overlooking the ocean, or get pampered at the tranquil CHI Spa with its comprehensive treatment menu.

Possibly the most exciting feature to Shangri-La Colombo is its six restaurants, bars and lounges. Highlights include Shangri-La’s renowned Shang Palace Chinese restaurant, inspired by China’s traditional Siheyuan houses; the 204-seat Capital Bar & Grill serving steaks, grilled seafood and the city’s most extensive whisky selection; and Kaema Sutra, a Sri Lankan themed restaurant and bar led by Colombo’s celebrity chef Dharshan Munidasa.
