Air New Zealand is undertaking a secretive project to redesign its business class cabin for a next new generation aircraft that will arrive in the early 2020s, reports the New Zealand Herald.

Apparently, the airline is working on the design in a secure site named “Hangar 22” near its Auckland headquarters. The design features “frequent flyers, design specialists and its own small innovation team”.

Air New Zealand launched its business premier seats around 10 years ago, the same time it got rid of first class. In 2010, the lie-flat Skycouch economy seat was unveiled.

No details of the new business class seats have been revealed. It is expected to be rolled out by 2022, however. This is when the airline plans to take delivery of replacements for its older Boeing 777-200s.

Most airlines that serve New Zealand – such as Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways – offer more modern fleets with lie-flat business class seats. Some also have first class cabins

The New Zealand reports that this development project at Air New Zealand will also see a revamp of economy and premium economy cabins.
